Darfur NOW

October 16, 2007

Last night Alysha and I went to a screening of the new documentary Darfur Now. The screening was set up through UTA and Lindsay did a lot of work for it.

The documentary is about six different people and their first-hand experiences as they try to shed light about the genocide that is occuring in the Darfur region of Sudan. The six people are Don Cheadle, Hejewa Adam, Pablo Recalde, Ahmed Mohammed Abakar, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, and Adam Sterling.

Adam SterlingOf the six, Adam Sterling and Luis Moreno-Ocampo were my favorite to learn about. Adam is a UCLA student who felt compelled to do something about Darfur. Even though he has a limited set of resources, he was able to get a bill passed in the state of California that keeps our state funds from going to Darfur.

LuisLuis Moreno-Ocampo is originally from Argentina, which could be one of the reasons why I liked him. He is a prosocuter for the International Criminal Court. He also was one of the lawyers who prosecuted the corrupt government officials in Argentina for the mass killings that took place there in the 1970s.

All of the people they focused on were very intertesting to learn about though. Darfur Now is only playing in select cities, but Los Angeles is one of them. Check it out if you have time or rent it when it comes out on DVD.

Also, at the screening we ran into my old roommate Deb! So it was a fun night all-around!

It’s a great movie and a great way to learn about the situation-go see it!
And I’m glad that you came Claire Bear and like it, too!
